**2025 GMC Terrain Competes in a Crowded Compact CUV Market**

The new 2025 GMC Terrain is set to take on some tough competition in the U.S. compact crossover/SUV segment. The Terrain will face off against the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Equinox (its platform-mate), Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Ford Escape, and Mazda CX-5, as well as premium alternatives like the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Volvo XC40, Mercedes GLB, and Cadillac XT4 [2][3].

Despite sharing major mechanical components and dimensions with the Chevrolet Equinox, the Terrain aims to distinguish itself with its premium interior design and features. The 2025 Terrain offers wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot, as well as a touchscreen running the Android Automotive operating system with Google Services, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Play store [1]. The interior features sweeping horizontal lines, chrome accents, and a 15-inch portrait-oriented floating center touchscreen.

However, sales figures for Q2 2025 highlight the dominance of the Toyota RAV4, which remains the segment leader with 124,049 units sold in the U.S., far outpacing all competitors [4]. The Honda CR-V follows closely with 109,236 units, and these two models are the only ones to individually surpass 100,000 sales in the quarter [4]. The Chevrolet Equinox, the Terrain’s closest sibling, trails significantly behind with 58,887 units, still well ahead of the GMC Terrain, which sold just 16,413 units—a sharp 40% decline year-over-year [4].

The GMC Terrain's AWD system enhances traction in various conditions, and the vehicle continues with a 1.5L turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine. The ride and handling are tuned for everyday driving comfort. The Terrain has a towing capacity of 1,500 lbs. (680 kg) and a fuel economy of 27 combined mpg for FWD and 25 combined mpg for AWD [1].

GM has announced that it will not raise prices for the Terrain, despite paying extra tariffs to import them into the U.S. from Mexico. The Terrain is available in the Elevation trim, with base prices of $31,395 for FWD and $33,395 for AWD [1]. An 11-inch digital driver information center is also included, offering customizable displays.

Looking ahead, the AT4 trim will return in 2026, starting at $38,600 and including a special Terrain driving mode, metal underbody protection, front-end recovery hooks, and AT4 badging. The Denali trim, starting at $43,590, features a premium tuned suspension, chrome exterior accents, French-stitched perforated leather seats, a native nav system, Bose premium 7-speaker audio system, wireless phone charging, head-up display, front and rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated seats, and body-colored lower body trim [1].

Despite its premium offerings, the GMC Terrain struggles to compete on volume with segment leaders, largely due to brand positioning and indistinct differentiation from the more popular Chevrolet Equinox [1][4]. While the Terrain offers quality and comfort, it lacks the sales momentum, brand recognition, and product differentiation that drive RAV4 and CR-V dominance [3][4]. The segment remains fiercely competitive, with several models enjoying stronger growth and broader appeal [2][4].

In the intensely competitive compact crossover/SUV market for 2025, the GMC Terrain will compete with various industry players, including the finance sector's Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and premium brands like the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Volvo XC40, Mercedes GLB, and Cadillac XT4. The automotive sector's Ford Escape, Subaru Forester, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Chevrolet Equinox (its platform-mate) also pose significant challenges.

In an effort to stand out from the competition, the 2025 GMC Terrain focuses on finance features, such as wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot, and the Android Automotive operating system with Google Services, while premium interior design offers chrome accents, a floating center touchscreen, and Google Assistant for a technology-oriented transportational experience.
