Santa Monica's prominent eatery, Birdie G's – famously known as the city's 'hottest restaurant' – is scheduled to shut down in December.

After a successful run of two years, the lauded Santa Monica restaurant, Birdie G's, will be closing its doors at the end of 2025. The restaurant, located at 2421 Michigan Ave., has been a popular destination for food lovers, offering a unique blend of Midwestern, Jewish, and Californian cuisine.

Jeremy Fox, the chef-owner of Birdie G's, announced the closure in a statement. Fox opened the restaurant in June 2019 with partners Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan. The restaurant has received recognition from the Michelin Guide and was reviewed favorably by L.A. Times Food critic Bill Addison.

The closure of Birdie G's is one of many restaurant closures in 2025 due to a series of events that included the pandemic, inflation, and entertainment-industry strikes. Other restaurants, such as a Michelin-starred izakaya, a natural wine bar, and a groundbreaking wine bar, are also closing due to various reasons.

Fox cited several factors for the closure of Birdie G's. The Palisades fire in January significantly impacted the restaurant's business. Additionally, the complex's buildout slowed after the pandemic, and the restaurant's lack of parking deterred business. Fox also mentioned the restaurant's location and sizable footprint, along with years of economic setbacks, as contributing factors.

Fox expressed concern about the future of mom-and-pop restaurants, particularly in the current restaurant industry crisis. The industry is facing a crisis due to new legislation, inflation, higher wages, and pandemic fallout. Fox hopes there will be a chance for Birdie G's to pop up again somewhere, somehow.

In the meantime, Fox plans to bid adieu to Birdie G's with more experimentation and a fan-favorite Hanukkah series. Some of Birdie G's staff chose to remain on through the end of the year, and some alumni will return for guest shifts and special appearances.

As the year comes to a close, Birdie G's will be missed by many. However, Fox's innovative spirit and passion for food are sure to lead him to new culinary adventures in the future.

In a separate development, the L.A. Times is accepting recipe submissions for its 2025 Holiday Cookie Bake-Off until Monday, Oct. 13. If you have a delicious holiday cookie recipe to share, be sure to submit it before the deadline.
