🏪 Grab a home through Habitat for Humanity Since 2022, Habitat for Humanity Germany has successfully collaborated with local officials in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district to provide temporary housing for refugees. To date, 537 individuals have moved into their own apartments, and 171 rental contracts have been signed. The project is ongoing, and landlords are still needed.
We dish out the inside scoop from Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity Germany embarked on this mission in response to the war in Ukraine and the ensuing refugee crisis in March 2022. The initial hub was the city of Overath, where 70 rental contracts were swiftly finalized. The project later expanded to Bergisch Gladbach and now includes Kürten, Rösrath, and Odenthal.
🌐 Expanding horizons The project initially focused on hosting Ukrainian refugees but now welcomes displaced individuals from any nation. The housing projects' aim is to accommodate as many as possible and promote their smooth integration into the community.
🌍 Supporting municipalities and integration The district still houses many refugees in municipal shelters, which poses a significant challenge for municipalities. This project offers concrete solutions to ease the burden. "The cooperation in Overath has been running smoothly for three years now. The mediation in private housing has proven to be a valuable tool for promoting integration and relieving the stress on municipal resources," explains Jörg Schiefer, head of the public safety and social affairs department in Overath.
🏘️ A roof over one's head "Secure housing is a crucial foundation for successful integration," emphasizes Gereon Fischer, member of the Habitat for Humanity Germany board. To date, demand for housing remains high, and more landlords are needed to join the initiative.
