Advocates urge for the implementation of a novel child benefit program

Klaus Müller, the head of Germany's consumer protection organisations, has proposed a series of measures to support consumers during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Müller has suggested a nationwide campaign to encourage resource sharing among neighbours, families, and communities. This initiative aims to promote the sharing of resources such as cars, tools, household items, and even school supplies among individuals. In addition, Müller advocates for the establishment of a national task force to oversee and support these resource-sharing initiatives across Germany.

Müller also proposes that the government could provide financial incentives for businesses that promote resource sharing. He believes that this could help alleviate financial stress for many families during these challenging times.

In a critical stance, Müller criticises the temporary VAT reduction, stating that it didn't provide enough relief for consumers. He points out that in some sectors like hospitality, furniture retail, or online retail, companies pocketed the money instead of passing the savings to consumers.

To provide further support, Müller calls for a renewed credit moratorium for consumer loans, with a three-month payment pause in case of payment difficulties due to the coronavirus. He also emphasises the importance of ensuring that banks do not circumvent the system, as they did during the first credit moratorium.

Müller also proposes a revival of the child bonus due to the coronavirus crisis. He believes that this could provide additional financial aid to families in need.

In terms of environmental benefits, Müller emphasises the potential of resource sharing to reduce waste and promote sustainability. He suggests that digital platforms could play a crucial role in facilitating resource sharing, and he proposes the creation of a national sharing platform.

Moreover, Müller emphasises the importance of stronger legal enforcement of consumer rights and enhanced governmental consideration of consumer protection issues in future policies. He calls for sector investigations into digital services and online shopping practices to ensure compliance with consumer protection laws.

Lastly, Müller highlights the importance of lower electricity prices for replacing fossil fuels with clean energy in home heating. He believes that this could help reduce Germany's carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

These proposals aim to provide much-needed support to consumers during the coronavirus crisis while also promoting sustainability and community solidarity.
