Africa needs strong, effective leadership combined with meaningful reforms

In the heart of Africa, Nigeria witnessed a significant day on September 18, 2025, marked by progress, innovation, and discourse.

The day began with a momentous pledge in A'Ibom, where stakeholders rallied together to support the STOP guidelines. These guidelines are aimed at reducing mortality rates, a critical step towards improving the overall health and wellbeing of the population.

Meanwhile, in a different part of the country, the academic community at NOUN (National Open University of Nigeria) received a significant boost. They were granted patent rights for various inventions, a testament to their intellectual prowess and the potential for home-grown solutions to drive innovation.

In a striking turn of events, the same day saw a discussion on the importance of home-grown solutions in the fight against insurgency in Africa. This discourse, no doubt, will contribute to the ongoing efforts to find sustainable and effective strategies in combating the challenges faced by the continent.

However, the day was not without a sombre reminder of the past. It was reported that the organization calling for the rescue of the remaining Chibok girls, who were abducted by Boko Haram in 2014, was indeed Boko Haram itself. Despite the efforts of various international and local groups since then, the initial abduction was indeed orchestrated by the terrorist group.

On a more positive note, Nigeria also set its sights on the future, aiming to generate $22 billion annually from its bamboo value chain. This ambitious goal reflects the country's determination to leverage its natural resources for economic growth and development.

September 18, 2025, was indeed a day of contrasts in Nigeria - a day of progress and a day of reflection, a day of innovation and a day of remembrance. As the sun sets on this day, the nation looks forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
