Airline company Spirit Airlines reduces November 2025 flight schedule by a quarter, after filing for bankruptcy for the second time.

In a challenging period for the airline industry, Spirit Airlines has announced a series of cost-cutting measures aimed at navigating its financial difficulties. The budget carrier filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year on August 29, 2025.

The airline, which exited its first bankruptcy on March 13, 2025, is now facing a more complex situation. Spirit Airlines CEO Dave Davis informed staff of the schedule cut in a memo on September 17, 2025. The memo did not reveal the specific number of positions that might be affected, but it is clear that the measures will have a significant impact on the workforce.

Starting October 1, 2025, 270 pilots will be furloughed, while 140 pilots will be demoted from captain to first officer on November 1, 2025. These changes are part of a broader restructuring that also includes the cancellation of plans for a new Spirit Airlines route to Macon, Georgia, and the cessation of Spirit Airlines flights to 11 US cities in October 2025. These cities include Albuquerque, Birmingham, Boise, Chattanooga, Columbia, Oakland, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, and San Jose.

In addition to these changes, Spirit Airlines has announced plans to cut its November 2025 schedule by 25% compared to November 2024. This reduction in Spirit Airlines flight capacity is expected to lead to further staff cuts, particularly affecting pilots, with about 300 pilot layoffs or furloughs possible.

The Spirit Airlines flight attendants' union, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, has warned members to prepare to act to protect their interests. The union stated that the current bankruptcy is expected to be more difficult than the last one. Despite the challenges, Spirit Airlines remains committed to focusing on its most profitable markets to ensure the company's long-term sustainability.
