Aldi officially denies plans to establish a new store in Arheilgen

In a recent development, supermarket chain Aldi has announced its intention to withdraw from a store construction project in the city of Darmstadt, Germany. According to a legally binding withdrawal declaration that Aldi is set to submit to the city in the near future, the project will be cancelled.

This decision comes amidst ongoing discussions between Aldi and the city authorities regarding the project. The performance contract between the two parties will be rescinded upon Aldi's withdrawal, with the supermarket chain being responsible for covering the costs of the cancellation, as stated in the agreement.

The cancellation of the project has raised concerns about the local supply, which has been waning in recent weeks. However, the city is considering using its right of repurchase of the property from Aldi, which is valid until 2028.

Meanwhile, progress is being made in the expansion of the Edelstein Quarter, with further areas being converted into residential space. The mayors Kolmer and Wandrey have welcomed this decision, expressing their support for the development of the city.

In a separate matter, the FDP has announced that it will not support the draft budget of the magistracy. The Greens' branch, which is currently defending itself against accusations from the FDP, has not commented on this issue.

On the other hand, the CDU, Greens, SPD, and Volt have agreed on a draft for the city budget, which is expected to be approved by the city council in April. The mayor, Hanno Benz (SPD), has set up a working group to wind down the cancelled project and to involve citizens in the implementation of future projects through this group.

It is important to note that the building law remains in effect, but the person who will implement the project is not currently regulated. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it would be best to contact local authorities or check local news sources in Darmstadt.

Other business entities may be interested in the cancelled store construction project, given Aldi's withdrawal from the agreement. The city might explore other finance options to fund similar developments, considering Aldi's responsibility for the cancellation costs per the agreement.
