Almaty participants compete for speediness, utilizing subway, bicycles, or scooters as their transportation methods
In the heart of Kazakhstan, Almaty residents have taken matters into their own hands to address the city's notorious traffic congestion. A local blogger, Vladislav, spearheaded an experiment comparing travel times during rush hour using various modes of transport, stirring up a lively debate on social media.
Vladislav, known for his passion for urban mobility, was personally intrigued by the travel times in Almaty. His interest was piqued by the efficiency of trains in other cities, such as those running every 40 seconds, significantly reducing traffic congestion.
Inspired, Vladislav dreamt of an extended safe bike lane in Almaty, mirroring the one in Astana. He is convinced that the solution must be comprehensive, focusing on the development of public transport, specifically addressing the lack of stations and long intervals during peak hours.
The experiment saw participants travelling from various starting points to a specific destination, with the cyclist reaching the destination point the fastest, taking 20 minutes and 38 seconds. Vladislav, who opted for an electric scooter, followed closely behind with a time of 38 minutes and 40 seconds.
The metro rider arrived second, at 34 minutes and 6 seconds, while the car driver took 54 minutes and 54 seconds to reach the destination point. One participant noted that they took 58 minutes, with 28 minutes spent waiting for the bus alone. Vladislav's friend waited for a bus for 28 minutes, which he found unacceptable for a metropolis.
The video of this experiment has received hundreds of thousands of views and sparked online discussion. Viewers believe that the city of Almaty needs new transportation solutions, including the development of public transport, the creation of dedicated lanes, and the improvement of bike lanes.
Yesterday, September 16, Almaty experienced 10-point traffic jams, the peak indicator since summer, causing citizens to wait at bus stops and taxi prices to skyrocket. This experiment has highlighted the need for more efficient and sustainable transportation options in the city.
Vladislav aims to inspire city residents to find solutions that would make Almaty more convenient and healthy to live in. He emphasizes the importance of bike lanes in warm weather but notes that in Almaty, they become unsafe and dangerous during colder months due to air pollution.
The idea for the experiment studying how quickly Almaty residents could reach a specific point in the city during rush hour using different modes of transportation originated from a local urban mobility researcher or city planner (specific individual not widely documented).
As Almaty continues to grow, it is clear that addressing traffic congestion is crucial for the city's future. The experiment has shown that there are alternatives to the traditional car commute, and it is up to the city's residents to find solutions that work for them.
