"Andhra Aqua Farmers to Suffer Due to US Tariffs; Chandrababu Naidu Pledges Aid"
In the face of global instability, as highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state of Andhra Pradesh is taking proactive measures to support its aqua farmers who may be affected by the potential impact of the US imposing 25% tariffs on Indian imports.
At an event in Prakasam district, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu publicly vowed support for shrimp farmers, signalling state-level measures to help them navigate the tariff challenges. The chief minister also mentioned that the increase in tariffs in America will burden the aqua farmers in the state.
To alleviate this burden, the Andhra Pradesh government is providing electricity to aqua farmers at 1.50 paise per unit and has announced an increase in financial aid for fishermen. Originally, each fisherman received Rs 10,000, but this has now been increased to Rs 20,000 each.
Meanwhile, the central government is also offering initiatives to support the aquaculture sector. These include insurance schemes, access to quality seed, and capacity-building programs under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). These national programs aim to boost productivity and ensure quality standards in aquaculture, benefiting fishers and fish farmers in Andhra Pradesh.
In addition, partnerships with organizations such as WorldFish are strengthening small-scale aquaculture in Andhra Pradesh. These collaborations aim to improve productivity, support fish value chains, and integrate nutrition-sensitive practices. This indirectly supports farmers by improving aquaculture sustainability and economic resilience, which is crucial given international trade uncertainties like US tariff hikes.
Prime Minister Modi, speaking at an event in Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency, reaffirmed the resilience of the Indian economy amid turbulence triggered by the US tariff hike. He stated that the welfare of farmers, small industries, and young people remains the government's "top priority." The Prime Minister also advocated for the adoption of "swadeshi (indigenous)" products.
However, the country must remain vigilant about its economic interests, according to PM Modi. He stated that all countries are focusing on their individual interests, and India must do the same. Apart from the tariffs, President Trump announced a penalty on India for buying Russian oil.
