Spotlight on Poverty: Thuringia's Struggle with Economic Hardship
Approximately 15.7% of Thuringia's residents dwell under the threshold of poverty levels. - Approximately one out of every six Thuringians reside beneath the poverty threshold.
Looks like one in every six Thuringians are grappling with poverty, making the federal state the ninth highest in terms of poverty rate among Germany's states. According to the latest Poverty Report released by the Paritarian Welfare Association, Thuringia has a poverty rate of 15.7%, just barely edging above the national average of 15.5%.
Interestingly, even some western states like North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony have higher rates of poverty than Thuringia. On the other hand, states like Bremen and Saxony-Anhalt are home to more impoverished individuals, while Bavaria, with its robust economy, is leading the pack with the lowest poverty rate.
Despite a small decrease in poverty percentage compared to the last few years, Stephan Panhans, managing director of Paritarian Thuringia, isn't optimistic. “The barely perceptible decrease indicates a lack of progress in addressing the underlying causes of poverty,” Panhans commented.
Inflationary pressures across Germany are worsening the situation. According to the report, rising prices and stagnating wages have significantly impacted the purchasing power of the poor, leaving them high and dry. “People don't feel any real relief—living costs are escalating while many incomes aren't keeping pace,” Panhans stated, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action from policymakers to alleviate poverty.
The poverty line in Germany is set at €1,381 net income per month for an individual or €2,900 for a family of four with two children under 14. Those below this line are considered struggling to maintain their standard of living in the society.
