Arizona Gas Prices to Surge After California Refinery Fire
Arizona drivers are bracing for a significant increase in gas prices following a major fire at a Southern California refinery. The state's gas prices were already high, averaging $3.54 per gallon as of Friday, according to AAA. However, the Chevron refinery disaster in El Segundo, California, is set to push prices even higher.
Petroleum analyst Matt McClean warns against changing gas-buying habits to avoid further demand spikes. He estimates that Arizona gas prices could rise by about 30 to 50 cents per gallon due to the refinery fire. This could see prices soar well over $4 per gallon in the Grand Canyon State. Metro Phoenix drivers are particularly affected, with average prices already at $3.80 per gallon.
The extent of the refinery damage and repair time remain unknown, making it challenging to predict how long Arizona gas prices will stay elevated. The fire is expected to halt the usual decrease in gas prices that Arizona typically experiences this time of year, as the switch to winter fuel blends occurs.
Arizona drivers face a period of elevated gas prices due to the Southern California refinery fire. While the extent and duration of the price increase remain uncertain, consumers are advised to maintain their usual gas-buying habits to avoid exacerbating the situation. The state's gas prices were already high, and this incident will only add to the financial burden on drivers.
