Australian airline, Virgin Australia, initiates trading on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)

After a period of restructuring and transformation, Virgin Australia Holdings Limited (Virgin Australia) has officially listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on June 24, 2025. The Initial Public Offering (IPO) raised A$685 million, offering 236.2 million fully paid ordinary shares at A$2.90 each, representing about 30.2% of the company's shares.

The IPO was met with strong demand from both domestic and international institutional and retail investors, marking a significant milestone in Virgin Australia's long-term growth strategy. The remaining equity is retained by Bain Capital, Qatar Airways Group, Virgin Group, and Queensland Investment Corporation.

Virgin Australia's listing on the ASX comes after the airline's successful emergence from administration in 2020 under the ownership of Bain Capital. The company is now operating with a renewed focus as a value carrier, flying more than 100 aircraft on 76 routes to 38 destinations domestically and in short-haul international markets.

The leadership team, including new independent, non-executive chairman Peter Warne and CEO Dave Emerson, projects confidence in the airline's resilience, competitive positioning, and ability to deliver long-term value for shareholders and customers.

Virgin Australia's IPO marks a new chapter for the airline, with CEO Dave Emerson stating that the company is entering its next phase with a clear strategy, simplified operating and commercial models, and an amazing team. The listing was also welcomed by Virgin Australia Chair, Peter Warne, who commented that it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the airline.

In addition to its domestic operations, Virgin Australia has expanded its reach through partnerships with global airlines, allowing customers to access over 650 destinations worldwide. The airline has also commenced long-haul services between Australia and Doha under a wet-lease arrangement with Qatar Airways this month.

As a publicly traded company, Virgin Australia is now positioned with a stable ownership base, a transformed operational strategy, and a market valuation that some investors consider attractively priced relative to competitors. The company is now focused on executing its growth plans and delivering value in a competitive aviation market. Normal settlement trading is expected to begin on June 26, 2025.
