Austria's APG Outlines Steps to Bolster Energy Grid Stability
Austria's Austrian Power Grid (APG) has outlined key steps for enhancing energy system stability and security. This follows a recent power outage on the Iberian Peninsula, caused by an 'overvoltage collapse' in Spain's grid. The APG's recommendations focus on better planning, network expansion, and promoting 'grid-friendly behavior'.
The APG identifies three areas of action: first, improving overall energy system planning for better coordination among networks, operators, producers, and consumers. Second, expanding networks and disclosing capacities to accommodate growing demand and renewable energy sources. Third, encouraging 'grid-friendly behavior' to optimize energy usage patterns.
The APG also emphasizes the need for a stronger role in coordinating these efforts, with appropriate regulations and timely grid expansion. Austria's energy policy is praised as fundamentally sound, but the APG recommends refining the planned energy market reform to bolster supply security. The improved reform, slated for mid-2024, will enhance the APG's coordination role and strengthen connections between transmission and distribution networks.
The APG, having contributed to an international report on the Iberian Peninsula blackout, supports the swift implementation of the Renewable Expansion Act (EABG) and the ElWG. Austria's modern network connection conditions and automatic voltage regulation helped prevent a similar incident, underscoring the importance of the APG's recommendations for a stable and secure energy future.
