Revved Up: Autonomous Vehicles Hit Swiss Roads

Step aside human drivers, the future is here – at least in Switzerland! From March 1, 2025, Switzerland welcomed automated vehicles onto its roads, marking a major milestone in the advancement of auto technology.

The Swiss government, hoping to revolutionize road safety and traffic flow, has paved the way for AI-driven cars to dominate the nation's highways. Alexandre Alahi, an assistant professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Lausanne (EPFL), and head of the Visual Intelligence for Transportation Laboratory, led the project's conception and development. According to Alahi, autonomous vehicles can potentially eliminate human error – the number one cause of road accidents.

So, what does this mean for drivers? Simply put, you can now let go of the wheel and cease constant traffic monitoring, as long as you're ready to take over at a moment's notice. The Federal Council has outlined the new rules, mentioning that drivers of automated vehicles can relinquish the steering gear on motorways, as automated systems will take over. However, drivers must be on standby to resume control should the automation system prompt them.

Driverless vehicles can also be used on designated sections of roads, approved by cantons in cooperation with the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Additionally, automated parking without human intervention will be permitted in specified car parks and parking spaces.

Cantons and municipalities will determine suitable spaces for autonomous vehicle operation. The vehicles themselves must be approved by cantons, with car manufacturers required to demonstrate road safety and traffic flow guarantees during the operating life of an automation system.

While some models, such as the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S Class, have already hit German motorways, Switzerland has yet to approve any self-driving vehicles for public use. Until more manufacturers request approval, automated vehicles will not be accessible to the general public.

Switzerland's autonomous vehicle regulations are regulated under the ordonnance sur la conduite automatisée, formalized on December 13, 2024. This ordinance, set to become effective on March 1, 2025, creates a legal and technical framework for the purchase and operation of autonomous vehicles, adhering to international conventions and European regulatory trends on automated driving.
