"Autovazi Contemplates Price Increase"

In the face of a contracting Russian car market and rising production costs, Lada, a prominent brand produced by AvtoVAZ, has announced potential price adjustments. This move comes as a result of discussions between AvtoVAZ and the Ministry of Industry and Trade regarding direct subsidies for discounts on Lada vehicles.

Maxim Sokolov, President of AvtoVAZ, highlighted inflation as a key factor contributing to increased production costs. He also mentioned the possibility of adjusting vehicle prices to reflect these costs.

On May 26, the Ministry of Industry and Trade expanded the program of preferential car loans, offering discounts of up to 20% for families with two children. This move is aimed at alleviating buyers’ financial burden and supporting demand. In addition, the "Family Car" subprogram offers a 10% discount on the car's cost.

Two-thirds of Ladas are purchased on credit, with a higher figure for some models, according to Sergei Gromak, Vice President of AvtoVAZ. The company is relying on these subsidized lending schemes to partially offset the impact of rising production costs.

The Russian car market is under significant pressure in 2025 due to high interest rates and increased fees, which have led to a 26-27% drop in sales for Lada and the broader passenger vehicle market in the first half of the year compared to 2024.

The launch of the Lada Iskra in July 2025 included three body styles (sedan, universal, and SW Cross), and it was priced to remain competitive with other models like the Lada Vesta and Granta. Despite the price increases, the Iskra features safety upgrades meeting tougher ARCAP crash tests, indicating investment in quality despite cost pressures.

However, the market is not just facing challenges in Russia. An investigation into a "price war" on the car market is currently underway in China, according to Sokolov. He noted the "aggressive dumping" by Chinese producers, but emphasised that selling cars below cost does not allow companies to accumulate resources for development.

In summary, Lada prices have been adjusted upward to reflect production cost increases but are moderated by targeted subsidies and discounts. The combination of stable yet higher price points with government-backed incentives aims to sustain sales in this difficult environment. The Russian car market, however, continues to face macroeconomic challenges, including high borrowing costs and fiscal fees, which are contributing to its contraction.

finance industry plays a crucial role in facilitating the use of subsidized loans for Lada vehicles, allowing buyers to purchase the cars amid rising production costs. The government's move to expand preferential car loan programs and the "Family Car" subprogram is essential to business growth in the car industry, offering incentives to buyers and countering the effects of high borrowing costs in the market.
