Baden-Württemberg Aims to Reverse Land Consumption with New Measures
Baden-Württemberg's state cabinet has approved a package of measures to tackle rising land consumption, driven mainly by housing demand. The cabinet, led by Minister Nicole Razavi, aims to reduce land use and promote efficient area management.
From 2016 to 2020, an average of 5.6 hectares of new land was claimed daily in Baden-Württemberg. To reverse this trend, the state government plans to introduce a de-sealing premium of around one million euros per year to renaturate specific areas. Additionally, the 'Winning areas through inner development' program will be enhanced to fund area managers in the commercial sector.
The State Development Plan will set guidelines to reduce land consumption. Model projects for efficient area reactivation or de-sealing will be initiated with municipalities, supporting them in saving space and utilizing existing areas more effectively. A digital overview of wasteland in the country will also be created to tap into existing reserves for residential space.
The Ministry of State Development and Housing, Baden-Württemberg, is spearheading these initiatives to combat land consumption. The action plan for saving space, which includes a bundle of instruments to reduce area consumption, is expected to help manage the growing demand for housing while preserving the state's natural resources.
