Six Contenders Vie for Benfica's Presidency

In the upcoming elections on October 25, six candidates have declared their intention to run for the presidency of Benfica, one of Portugal's most successful football clubs. Among the contenders is Luís Filipe Vieira, a name synonymous with success and stability at the club.

Luís Filipe Vieira, who served as Benfica's president from 2003 to 2021, is making a comeback. During his tenure, Vieira led Benfica to seven national championships, seven League Cups, three Portuguese Cups, and five Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira titles.

Vieira's notable achievements as president include hiring legendary coaches such as Giovanni Trapattoni early in his tenure in 2004 to end an 11-year league title drought. Under his leadership, Benfica remained a dominant force in Portuguese football, often competing for league titles and securing early silverware like the Supertaça.

One of Vieira's most memorable victories came in 2017 when Benfica defeated Vitória de Guimarães 3–1 to win the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. The club also maintained domestic consistency, including multiple strong league campaigns such as the 2017–18 season where Benfica finished as four-time defending champions though they ultimately placed second that season.

Vieira's era was marked by an emphasis on maintaining stability in the Primeira Liga and achieving competitive performances in domestic cup competitions. After Vieira, Rui Costa succeeded him as club president starting in 2021, indicating Vieira's long influence spanning multiple leadership terms at the club.

Joining Vieira in the race are João Noronha Lopes, João Diogo Manteigas, Martim Borges Coutinho Mayer, Cristovão Carvalho, and Rui Costa. Each candidate aims to follow in Vieira's footsteps and continue the club's success.

The October 25 elections will be a significant moment for Benfica as the club looks to choose its next leader. With a rich history and a passion for football, the club's supporters will undoubtedly be eager to see who will take the reins and guide Benfica to even greater heights.
