La Caisse Achieves 4.6% Return in First Half of 2025
La Caisse, one of Canada's largest pension funds, reported a 4.6% overall return for the first half of 2025, surpassing its benchmark portfolio return of 4.3%. This impressive performance was driven by strong returns across several sectors and strategic risk-taking during volatile market conditions.
In the stock markets, La Caisse increased its exposure to equities mid-year, capitalizing on a sharp rebound in the second quarter. This opportunistic move was a significant factor in its outperformance despite volatility caused by US tariff policies and market corrections earlier in the year.
The fixed income and credit portfolios also contributed to La Caisse's robust gain. They took more risks in their credit portfolio, which helped enhance their returns amid uncertain market conditions.
While the real estate return for La Caisse was 0.1%, below its sectoral reference index of 1.2%, the performance of its infrastructure investments was significantly below the sectoral reference index of 8.1%. However, La Caisse's infrastructure investments continue to be a pillar of stability, achieving a return of 4.5% during the first half of 2025.
La Caisse's diversified portfolio strategy seems to have paid off, with its total assets rising by C$23 billion to C$496 billion by the end of the first half of 2025. The fund has also been active in managing its private investments, selling $8 billion of its stakes in private companies and reinvesting $4 billion in this portfolio since the beginning of the year.
Charles Emond, President and CEO of La Caisse, has advised caution due to increased uncertainty related to U.S. trade policy. Despite the challenges, proactive portfolio management, timely increase in risk levels, and diversified exposure allowed La Caisse to generate a solid 4.6% return in H1 2025.

Investing strategically in the stock market, La Caisse exploited a rebound in the second quarter, ensuring a significant contribution to its overall return of 4.6% in the first half of 2025.
