British Columbia to Discontinue Electric Vehicle Rebate Scheme on May 15th
The British Columbia electric vehicle (EV) rebate program, which has been instrumental in promoting the adoption of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) in the province, is being paused for a review. The review aims to assess the program's effectiveness and potential future improvements.
The deadline for the British Columbia EV rebate program is May 15, 2025. According to the latest updates, the deadline to finalize the purchase or lease of an eligible vehicle is 11:59 p.m. PT on May 15, and the deadline to obtain online pre-approval for the B.C. EV rebate is 6:00 p.m. PT on May 15. Rebate amounts are based on individual income, with applicants earning less than $80,000 annually qualifying for the full rebate of up to $4,000.
The program, known as CleanBC Go Electric, has been a significant contributor to the growth of ZEVs in British Columbia. Since its launch in 2011, the program has helped put nearly 195,000 ZEVs on B.C. roads and supported the development of over 7,000 EV charging stations across the province.
However, the program is being paused due to economic instability. The total government investment in the British Columbia electric vehicle rebate program has exceeded $650 million. Despite this, the province is falling short of its goal to cut emissions by 40% by 2030, forecasting only a 20% reduction compared to 2007 levels.
Meanwhile, the federal government's Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program, which provided up to $5,000 off new ZEVs, was abruptly suspended in January 2025 after nearly $3 billion in funding was exhausted. The federal government has opened a temporary claims portal until August 11, 2025, for dealerships to recover unpaid rebates advanced to customers for eligible vehicles delivered between April 1, 2024, and January 12, 2025.
In contrast, Quebec continues to operate the "Roulez Vert" rebate program for used electric vehicles in 2025. This offers up to $3,500 in financial aid, typically $2,000 for eligible used EV purchases, with rebate amounts and eligibility subject to gradual reduction during 2025 and 2026.
The review of CleanBC policies, including the electric vehicle rebate program, is part of a broader review being conducted by the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions. New details about the CleanBC policies, including the electric vehicle rebate program, are expected in the coming months.
Despite the ending of the CleanBC Go Electric rebate program, the provincial government remains committed to ZEV adoption. Applicants earning up to $100,000 may receive a partial rebate amount, and the province continues to invest in the development of EV charging infrastructure.
