Brocken Railway Hikes Prices Again, Faces 800M Euro Crisis

The Brocken Railway Company (Brockenbahn Gesellschaft) has raised its prices for a round trip to the Brocken, effective October 8, 2023. The new fare stands at 65 euros, a 10-euro increase from last year. This marks the second price hike this year for the company, which is currently facing a 'highly critical' situation, requiring up to 800 million euros in investment calculator and expenditure until 2045.

The company attributed the price increase to sharply rising costs across all business areas. Despite the hike, the new fare remains cheaper than the initial price of 70 euros, which was in place before the first increase in March. The Brocken Railway Company is a subsidiary of Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB), which has also implemented a price rise this year. Supervisory board chairman Thomas Balcerowski has warned that the company's financial situation is dire, necessitating significant investment calculator and subsidies to ensure its long-term viability.

The Brocken Railway Company's recent price increase aims to mitigate the impact of soaring costs. However, the company's future remains uncertain, with a substantial funding gap of nearly 800 million euros needed by 2045. Stakeholders are urged to consider the company's critical situation and support its efforts to secure the required investment calculator and subsidies.
