Budget airline Wizz Air boosts its presence in Sibiu by introducing an additional plane and broadening its flight operations.
Wizz Air Expands Operations in Sibiu, Romania
Low-cost airline Wizz Air has significantly increased its presence in Sibiu, Romania, with the addition of new routes, increased aircraft capacity, and improved operational infrastructure.
The airline launched a new route from Birmingham Airport (UK) to Sibiu, starting October 2025, targeting both leisure travelers and the Romanian diaspora in the UK. Additionally, since August 1, 2025, Wizz Air began operating flights between Sibiu and Hamburg with a thrice-weekly frequency.
Wizz Air is growing its Romanian-based fleet, which includes aircraft stationed at Sibiu along with Bucharest Băneasa, Suceava, and Timișoara bases. The fleet in Romania is expected to reach 43 aircraft by winter 2025, reflecting a substantial capacity increase.
To support fleet growth and operational efficiency in Romania, Wizz Air has opened its first dedicated maintenance hub at Bucharest Băneasa Airport, servicing aircraft including those based at Sibiu. This facility will reduce aircraft downtime and improve reliability for routes from Sibiu and other Romanian bases.
With these expansions, Wizz Air is offering over one million seats to and from Sibiu, representing a 48% increase in capacity compared to 2024. The airline has also increased the frequency of flights to Memmingen, Nürnberg, and Baden-Baden, with four weekly flights each.
Since its first flight from Sibiu International Airport in 2014, Wizz Air has transported over three million passengers through the airport. The airline now operates flights from Sibiu to Basel, Frankfurt Hahn, Hamburg, Madrid, Rome Fiumicino, Vienna, Memmingen, Nürnberg, Baden-Baden, and Milan Bergamo.
Wizz Air will operate a new route to Milan Bergamo, starting in January 2026. Tickets for this route are already available on Wizz Air's website and mobile app, with fares starting at RON 79. The Milan Bergamo route will operate three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Wizz Air has stationed two Airbus A320ceo aircraft in Sibiu. The airline considers Romania a strategic market and has been operating in the country since 2006. During the 2025 winter season, Wizz Air will operate 13 routes from Sibiu, serving six countries.
These developments underscore Wizz Air's commitment to Sibiu as an important regional hub within its Romanian network, which currently operates 204 routes from 13 airports nationwide.
The expansion of Wizz Air in Sibiu, Romania, also includes forays into the finance sector, as the airline has announced partnerships with local banks to offer flexible payment options for tickets.
