Building Project Hamburg-Berlin: Service on the Routes Commences
Renovation of Hamburg-Berlin Railway Line Causes Issues with Passenger Information and Bus Labeling
The comprehensive renovation of the railway line between Hamburg and Berlin, scheduled for August 2025 to April 2026, has led to some challenges for passengers navigating the replacement transport system. The nine-month full closure necessitates the use of over 170 buses to substitute regional rail service, but the bus replacement is reported to have insufficient and unclear labeling, causing confusion for travelers.
Issues with Passenger Information and Bus Labeling
The replacement traffic involves extensive bus services, but travelers have experienced difficulty identifying the correct buses at stations due to inadequate labeling. The current passenger information is dispersed across various platforms, including the DB Navigator app, bahn.de, and regional transit apps. However, coordination and clarity on bus connections, timings, and platform changes need to be enhanced to ensure smooth travel planning.
Real-time travel updates are partially available, but they need to be more comprehensive, including better signage and staff presence at affected stations to assist passengers unfamiliar with the detailed replacement network. The complexity of rerouted long-distance services, including diversions via Stendal and Uelzen, plus the suspension of some direct international trains, increases the information demand, which is insufficiently met by the current communication measures.
Improvements Needed
The improvements needed focus on clearly labeling replacement buses at stops, enhancing passenger information availability and detail in real time, and providing on-site assistance to reduce confusion. These enhancements would help passengers navigate the replacement transport more effectively during the full shutdown period.
Construction Progress and Challenges
The renovation, which began on Friday evening, is progressing as planned at the construction site in Dergenthin, according to DB project manager Julian Fassing. The first switches are being renewed in Dergenthin, with the focus on the track bed and signal technology. Once the old switches and ballast are removed, new ballast will be distributed, and the new switches installed.
However, some stops lack timetable displays, and buses are sometimes incorrectly or incompletely labeled, according to the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB). The VBB also reported problems with passenger information on Monday, with real-time data only available reliably for a portion of the replacement bus fleet.
The VBB wishes for additional staff at some stops to address these issues and improve the overall passenger experience during the renovation period. The railway hopes that after the renovation, no construction work will be necessary on the line for at least five years.
In a section between Dergenthin (Perleberg) and Karstädt in Brandenburg, a cleaning machine is in use to clean the ballast. The Hamburg-Berlin railway line renovation is expected to be completed by the end of April.

- The ongoing Hamburg-Berlin railway line renovation, extended to include bus services due to the railway closure, necessitates improvements in bus labeling to help travelers identify the correct buses accurately at stations.
- To address the current challenges faced by passengers, such as insufficient and unclear labeling of replacement buses, enhanced staff presence at affected stations is needed to provide on-site assistance and improve the overall passenger experience during the renovation period.
