Bus operators National Express and Alsa are set to merge, forming a powerful new entity in the coach industry.
National Express, the UK's leading scheduled coach operator, and Alsa, a highly respected leader in the Spanish market, have announced plans to merge in January 2026. The move aims to create a pan-European coach powerhouse, strengthening the ability to deliver great transport services for customers across the UK and Europe.
Javier Martinez Prieto, who has over 30 years of experience with Alsa, has been appointed as the new Managing Director for National Express UK Coach. Most recently, Javier held the role of Purchasing and Maintenance Director at Alsa.
In his new role, Javier will play a key part in advancing National Express' strategic growth, leading the combined coach business and uniting two coach giants. He will work closely with Kevin Gale, CEO of National Express UK and Germany, to ensure a smooth transition.
Kevin will remain in his current position, while Victor Lopez, General Manager of Alsa Spain and UK, will lead the combined coach business. Both companies currently operate under the Mobico Group.
The integration aims to combine market expertise and unlock strategic efficiencies. The merger is expected to enhance the service offerings and improve operational performance, benefiting both companies' customers.
It's worth noting that National Express will retain its brand in the UK transport sector, ensuring continuity for its loyal customer base. The name of the management team that will take over the operational leadership of the combined bus companies after the merger is not yet provided.
Both National Express and Alsa are highly respected leaders in their respective markets, and this merger promises to bring about significant changes in the European coach industry. As the companies move forward with the merger, they are committed to maintaining their focus on delivering high-quality services to their customers.
