Canada adjusts financial prerequisites for the Parents and Grandparents Program
The Canadian government has announced the minimum income requirements for sponsors of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2025. The requirements vary depending on the size of the sponsor's family.
For a family of 2 people, the minimum income requirement is $47,549 for the year 2024, $44,530 for 2023, and $43,082 for 2022. This increases for larger families. For a family of 3 people, the minimum income requirements are $58,456, $54,743, and $52,965 for the same years, respectively.
For a family of 4 people, the minimum income requirements are $70,972, $66,466, and $64,306 for the years 2024, 2023, and 2022 respectively. The requirements continue to rise for larger families. For a family of 5 people, the minimum income requirements are $80,496, $75,384, and $72,935 for the same years.
For families with 6 or more members, the minimum income requirement per additional person is $10,291, $9,636, and $9,324 for the years 2024, 2023, and 2022 respectively.
It is important to note that all persons in the sponsor's household, including themselves, their spouse or common-law partner, dependent children, and the parents or grandparents being sponsored, must be considered when determining whether the minimum income requirements are met.
The PGP is a family reunification pathway to permanent residency in Canada. Eligible Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians can sponsor their parents or grandparents for PR through the PGP. To be eligible, sponsors must agree to support their relative(s) during the duration of their stay, meet income requirements, have qualifying health insurance, a valid travel document while they're in Canada, and be admissible.
The federal government will start sending out invitations to potential sponsors of the PGP on July 28, 2025. A total of 17,860 invitations will be sent out over a two-week period. Since the demand for the PGP has exceeded the spots that are available, the government uses a lottery system to distribute invitations.
The super visa program, which allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to host parents or grandparents for up to 10 years as visiting temporary residents, has separate income requirements. To meet the minimum income requirements for the super visa, sponsors must have an income of at least $47,549 for the year 2024.
The aim is to accept 10,000 complete applications in 2025. Sponsors must receive an invitation to apply before being able to sponsor their parents or grandparents. To be considered for the PGP, interested sponsors must have submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020. All invitations being sent out will be to these sponsors.
In conclusion, the Canadian government has announced the minimum income requirements for sponsors of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in 2025. The requirements vary depending on the size of the sponsor's family, with larger families requiring higher minimum incomes. Interested sponsors must have submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020 to be considered for the PGP, and invitations will be sent out starting on July 28, 2025.
