Capital persists in its consolidation trajectory, planning for approximately EUR 90 million in investments
Magdeburg's 2026 Budget: Key Projects and Challenges Ahead
Magdeburg, the state capital, is preparing for a significant year ahead as it unveils its budget plan for 2026. The city is expected to face a budget deficit of approximately 57 million euros, with planned revenue of around 968 million euros and expenditures of 1.025 billion euros.
To tackle this financial challenge, a working group on budget consolidation has been established. The group is expected to develop additional measures, such as potential further savings or new negotiations, to create more financial leeway. The exact specific measures are yet to be determined or detailed publicly.
One of the key areas of investment in 2026 will be building projects. These include the new construction of a rescue station in Neu Olvenstedt, the Integrated Comprehensive School at the University Place, and the planned Child Protection Center. The administration also plans to build a new control center and training fire station, and a new comprehensive school will be constructed in the city center.
Expenditures in the social sector account for almost 47 percent of the total budget, primarily concerning the implementation of the legal full-day claim for a Kita, nursery, and after-school care place, the coverage of housing costs, and support for education.
In addition to these projects, Magdeburg is also focusing on infrastructure improvements. Work on the replacement of the power bridge complex will be finished, and the industrial harbor revitalization will proceed. Rebuilding bridges on the Magdeburg Ring is planned, and the fourth phase of the second north-south connection of the MVB (from Damaschkeplatz to Neustaedter Feld/Hermann-Bruse-Platz) will be built. A cycle path along the road between Rothensee and Glindenberg will also be constructed.
The city hall renovation and surroundings improvement will continue, and a noise barrier on the Magdeburg Ring at Umfassungsstraße will be completed. The MLV Einheit clubhouse will be rebuilt, and an orchestra rehearsal room will be constructed.
A new swimming pool for high-performance sports (subject to funding) will be constructed, and IT equipment for schools and hardware/software will be provided through the Digital Pact II. However, the construction of a new city hall will not be mentioned in this current paragraph.
The challenges facing Magdeburg include rising social expenses, dilapidated bridges, and increasing personnel costs. The administration plans to continue consolidation efforts in 2026 to maintain capacity. The city capital is waiting for appropriate funding through the Financial Equalization Act of the state, which could provide around 18 million euros and help reduce the projected deficit by almost a third.
The draft budget plan for 2026 includes planned investments of nearly 90 million euros. The administration's proposal will be discussed in committees in October and November before the city council decides on December 8. The budget plan for 2026 is available online at www.magdeburg.de.
