CATL's €7.3B Hungary Plant to Boost EU EV Battery Supply
Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) is expanding its global footprint with a new plant in Debrecen, Hungary. The €7.3 billion facility, set to start production in early 2026, will supply major European automakers with advanced plant cell batteries, supporting their electrification efforts.
The Debrecen plant, part of CATL's globalization strategy, will directly serve core customers such as BMW, Stellantis, and Volkswagen. With a planned annual capacity of 100 GWh, it will become one of the largest EV battery manufacturing bases in Europe.
Construction began in 2022, and the project has already created over 9,000 jobs. The plant is expected to start supplying these key customers with battery cells around 2025/26, ahead of schedule.
CATL's Debrecen plant, with its significant investment and planned capacity, underscores the company's commitment to supporting European automakers in their transition to electric vehicles. The facility is set to play a crucial role in the region's EV battery supply chain.
