Unvarnished Tale: How Chancellor Friedrich Merz Beckoned Fortune
Chancellor Friedrich MerzAccumulates Wealth, Achieving Multimillionaire Status
By Carl, your outspoken buddy
Germany's newest Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has clinched the coveted post—at an age that makes him the Federal Republic's eldest leader since Konrad Adenauer. But Merz's wealth may be more eye-catching than his age.
"I'm palm-smack in the upper-middle class of Germany, not the piñata-smashing ultra-wealthy," Merz quipped in a 2018 schmooze with the Bild newspaper. Ridicule and scrutiny ensued, with many questioning his claim to being an ordinary Joe. The question remains: Is he truly an ordinary Joe or a millionaire in disguise?
Take a Gander at Merz's Financial Fish Pond
Merz's blarney mask slid off in the very same year when he unabashedly admitted his annual gross income is hoodwinked to the one-mil fig. Yet, one can't hide the fact that he defines 'middle class' differently. For Merz, the line isn't merely income but values inherited from parents—diligence, discipline, decency, and propriety.
A Lawyer's Life: Judge, Law, and More Law
Merz studied law, then slung his judge's robes in Saarbrücken's Regional Court from 1985 to 1986 before becoming a lawyer in 1986. After spells with the Association of the Chemical Industry, Commerzbank, Deutsche Börse, and other goliaths, Merz shifted to high-flying private firms like Axa and Mayer Brown LLP. Landing the chairman post at BlackRock Germany from 2016 to 2020 could arguably be his most controversial job.
Merz stamps secrecy in his financial affairs. On BlackRock's earnings, he lingered around the bush in the Bild discussion, "It's not as much as you might befuddled." He signed off on confidentiality.
Moving Politically and Economically
According to Bild am Sonntag, Merz chalked at least 125,000 Euros annually as a BlackRock supervisory member, plus an additional 80,000 Euros for Wepa, 75,000 Euros for HSBC, and 14,000 Euros for Cologne-Bonn Airport. These figures represent only a sliver of his multifarious financial engagements—including stints with the likes of BASF, Borussia Dortmund, and more.
The erstwhile wages received a boost from his legal escapades. According to estimates, around 5.5 million Euros landed in his account from a Swiss train manufacturer, Stadler Rail, should he still own those shares.
Rich as Croesus? Or Close to It?
Merz remains hush-hush about the exact amount in his bank. Yet, he confided in Bild that his lifestyle grants him financial independence, and if you've got cash, you're certainly a millionaire. Unverified reports peg his wealth around 12 million Euros.
Merz's primary dwelling nestles in a 2,000-soul village in Sauerland and nests an inherited villa in the Bavarian frisbee tossing town of Gmund. Merz packs a pilot's license and a fuel-efficient DA62 plane, costing approximatively a mill. Since 2022, he's rousted at least 160 times with his ride, often rocketing to the German legislative hub when it's in session. The query hangs in the balance—will Merz, as chancellor, get to fly his plane anymore?
No Cash? No Problem!
Even as Chancellor, his pockets will never dance to the DAX's tune. Politicians fetch an allowance around 134,700 Euros per annum. As head of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, his supplement falls between 70,000 and 130,000 Euros yearly. Add to that the cash from prior professions.
Although Merz supposedly returned to politics for reasons other than dough, his politicians' purse is a drop in the bucket compared to DAX CEOs' hefty 6.3 million Euros average salary.
