Chery Recalls 20,063 eQ1 EVs Over Battery Software Issue

Chery Automobile Co., Ltd. is recalling 20,063 Chery eQ1 electric vehicles (EVs) due to a software issue in their battery systems. The recall affects models produced between December 3, 2016 and February 9, 2018.

The battery system software strategy problems were discovered by Chery in 2019. The issue can cause power limitation during travel and, in extreme cases, high-voltage system disconnection, leading to vehicle power loss. Chery will address this safety hazard by upgrading the battery management system software of the recalled vehicles free of charge.

This recall is notable as it is one of the first of its kind among local Chinese autotraders. Previously, EV recalls have been more commonly seen from foreign companies such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Tesla.
