Chevron Refinery Explosion in El Segundo Lights Up South Bay Night Sky
A large explosion and fire at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo on Friday evening sent massive flames and smoke plumes into the sky, visible for miles across the South Bay. The cause of the incident remains unknown as firefighters continue to battle the blaze.
Residents reported feeling a significant blast around 9:30 p.m., with orange flames and smoke filling the sky. Despite the intense fire, no injuries were reported, and no evacuation orders were issued by emergency response agencies. The city of El Segundo confirmed the fire but assured there was no public threat. Chevron described the incident as an 'isolated fire' and confirmed that all personnel and contractors were accounted for.
Traffic was diverted away from the scene, with road closures in place along Rosecrans Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. This is not the first such incident in the South Bay, which is home to several major oil production facilities. In 2022, a fire at the El Segundo facility took firefighters two hours to put out. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom were briefed on the incident.
The cause of the Chevron refinery fire and explosion in El Segundo remains under investigation. Despite the dramatic scene, no injuries were reported, and no evacuation orders were necessary. The public is advised to avoid the area while emergency services continue to manage the situation.
