China Reveals Belarusian Potash Purchase Prices: Examining the Figures

China's Potash Fertilizer Imports See Mixed Trends Amidst Global Supplier Mix

According to the General Administration of Customs of China, the country's imports of potash fertilizers have seen some shifts in the first four months of 2025, with Russia, Belarus, and Canada remaining key suppliers. The data indicates a slight decrease in total spending on potash supplies compared to the same period last year.

Preliminary figures show that China's total imports of potash fertilizers under the tariff item "Mineral or Chemical Fertilizers, Potash" amounted to approximately $1.32 billion from January to April 2025. This figure represents a decrease compared to the $1.47 billion spent during the same period in 2024.

The largest supplier of potash to the Chinese market remains Russia, with Russia-soured potash purchases totaling $464.5 million in the January-April period of 2025. Belarus comes in second place, with China importing potash fertilizers worth nearly $309 million from our country. Canada follows closely behind, with imports of potash into China from the North American nation amounting to $219.9 million.

Analysis of April-specific data shows that Russia continued to be the major supplier, with purchases amounting to $149.4 million. Belarus and Laos recently joined the top three suppliers, with Belarus providing approximately $69.4 million worth of potash fertilizers and Laos exporting around $49.8 million. Canadian and Israeli imports stood at $26.4 million and $16.9 million, respectively.

Despite the contraction in import value, the average annual growth rate in the volume of potash imports from 2013 to 2024 was around 7.1%. The average import price for potash fertilizers in 2024 was $295 per ton, down 26.1% from the previous year. Ongoing market analysis predicts continued growth in China's import of potassium chloride (MOP) in 2025.

While the data presented offers a broad overview of China's potash fertilizer import trends and pricing, specific, detailed monthly or country-specific import volumes for January–April 2025 compared to 2024—and especially for April—are not explicitly published in the accessible sources. Official customs statistics from China may be required for the most up-to-date and granular data.

In light of the decline in spending on total potash supplies from January to April 2025, compared to the same period in 2024, the finance industry might be paying close attention to the energy sector's global supply trends, particularly in industries related to fertilizer, as China's key suppliers remain Russia, Belarus, and Canada. With the ongoing growth in China's import of potassium chloride (MOP) predicted for 2025, the finance sector could also ponder the potential future impact on the energy industry, given the significant imports from these key suppliers.
