New Pope Leo XIV Emphasizes Traditional Family Values, Financial Reform, and Inclusion

In a recent development, Pope Leo XIV, the US-born leader of the Catholic Church who was elected just four months ago, has outlined his priorities and views on various key issues.

Emphasizing the importance of the traditional family, Pope Leo XIV defines it as a union between father, mother, and children. However, he also expressed a desire to welcome everyone into the Church, but not based on specific identities.

On the topic of sexual abuse within the Church, Pope Leo XIV acknowledged it as a real crisis, but stressed that it will not be the main focus of his papacy. He stated that any accused priest is innocent until proven guilty and must be protected as such.

Regarding the LGBTQ questions, Pope Leo XIV finds the issue highly polarizing. He did not publicly address the approximately 1,400 LGBTQ+ Catholics who came on pilgrimage to the Vatican, and there is no clear information about his stance on changing the Church's teaching on women deacons or the Church's doctrine on sexuality or marriage.

However, Pope Leo XIV has shown a willingness to continue listening to people regarding the topic of women deacons. He also admitted that people want the church doctrine to change and attitudes to change. He emphasized that we must change attitudes before considering changes to church doctrine.

Financial matters are another area of focus for Pope Leo XIV. With a background in various finance matters, he is well-equipped to deal with the Vatican's financial woes. He has also received American priest James Martin, an advocate for homosexual Catholics, in a private audience this month.

Pope Leo XIV meets regularly with world leaders in the Vatican city state, and he finds some parts of his job easier than others. He admitted that he is just dipping a "big toe into the shallow end" of internal Church governance.

It is important to note that Pope Francis, Leo's predecessor, made numerous statements welcoming traditionally seen as "sinners" into the Church. However, specific details about the person who was deposed or removed in April of the previous year and who lived as a missionary in Peru could not be confirmed.
