Citizens Demand Improved Communication About Road Repairs: Awareness of the Need for Infrastructure Upgrades, Along with a Preference for Transparent Dialogues and Community Input, Is Widely Expressed
In the city of Burlington, Ontario, traffic congestion has been a persistent issue, particularly on weekends, with Lakeshore Road and side streets experiencing heavy traffic. One resident, Dennis Hewko, has expressed his concerns about the situation.
Hewko, a North Shore Boulevard East resident, has been vocal about the need for an open dialogue between the City of Burlington and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) regarding the closure of access ramps to the QEW. He believes that this measure is crucial to prevent commuters from using these roads as bypasses during maintenance work on the bridge.
The congestion is due to road closures related to maintenance work on the QEW. The MTO recognizes the need for careful coordination with the City of Burlington to communicate and ease local traffic impacts. The City's Transportation team also communicates with the MTO and provides input on projects that affect Burlington.
However, Hewko is disappointed that the City of Burlington has not been communicating effectively with the MTO to have the access ramps closed during these times. Hewko suggested closing access ramps to the QEW southbound from Lakeshore and Northshore.
In response, the Mayor suggested that Hewko reach out to the Hon. Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria at the Ministry of Transportation to advocate for the closure of access ramps. However, Hewko received a response that offloads the issue onto the MTO's decision to control the access ramps.
The MTO issues transportation notices for closures, sometimes as late as the day before or even the day of the closures. Hewko believes that better notice would help in minimizing spillover impacts during necessary maintenance on the bridge. The deck of the bridge needs to be maintained, and better communication would aid in this process.
There is no publicly available information about current communication between the City of Burlington administration and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation or specific measures taken by the city to minimize the impact of roadworks on the QEW. The Mayor understands the disruption caused by the construction on the provincially owned highways and has expressed a commitment to finding solutions.
The MTO has announced plans to provide more communication to drivers and look at additional mitigation measures during Burlington Skyway Bridge lane closures. Despite this, Hewko feels that there is a lack of transparency and effective communication from the Ministry of Transportation. The city, for its part, simply repeats what MTO puts out.
As the traffic congestion continues to impact the daily lives of Burlington residents, Hewko's call for better communication and coordination between the City of Burlington and the MTO resonates with many. The goal is to minimize spillover impacts during necessary maintenance on the bridge and ensure a smoother commute for all Burlington residents.
