City's New Solar Plant Generates Clean Energy, Slashes Costs for Communal Facilities

A new solar plant has started operations in the city, generating clean energy and reducing costs for communal facilities. The environmental commissioner, believed to be Bundesumweltminister Carsten Schneider (SPD), has highlighted the importance of such projects for large building owners.

The solar installation, funded by the city under its 'Climate-friendly Living and Working' program, has been generating power for several weeks. It consists of 38 modules on the facade and nine on the roof, covering 70 square meters. With a total capacity of around 20 kWp, it produces approximately 12,000 kWh per year, enough to supply three four-person households.

The plant also includes a battery storage system that can hold up to 13.8 kWh of self-generated renewable energy. This allows the city to store excess energy for later use, further enhancing its sustainability.

The number of applications for similar projects has surged by 35 percent compared to last year. From January 1 to July 31, 2025, the city received 2,826 applications, with 1,805 submitted through the new online portal. A total of 6.5 million euros has been paid out to support these initiatives.

The city's solar plant serves as a model project, demonstrating the potential of renewable energy in reducing electricity costs and promoting sustainability. Environmental commissioner Jochen Kral encourages more property owners to adopt similar projects, with the city ready to support through its funding programs.
