Cologne: Weekend Traffic Changes Protect Aging Eifeltor Crossing
A new traffic management system is being implemented between Cologne-Klettenberg and Cologne-Eifeltor over the next two weekends. The measure aims to protect the aging DB crossing structure 'Eifeltor', which has shown increasing damage.
Heavy goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will be directed to the right in both directions. During the first weekend (4/5.4. and 5/6.4.), the A4 in the direction of Olpe will be affected. The exit and entry at Cologne-Klettenberg will be closed, and the stretch between the two junctions will be single-lane. The following weekend (11/12.4. and 12/13.4.), the A4 in the direction of Aachen will face similar restrictions, with single-lane traffic and occasional bottlenecks due to preparatory works during the day.
Until further notice, two out of three lanes will be available for traffic in both directions on the structure, with a speed limit of 40 km/h. The DB crossing structure 'Eifeltor', built in 1956 and widened in 1988 with a further parallel structure added in 1993, requires this temporary traffic management to ensure its safety and longevity.
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, allowing extra time for potential delays. The traffic management will be in place over the next two weekends, with specific closures and restrictions detailed above. The responsible authorities are working to minimize disruption while ensuring the safety of the crossing structure.
