Redoubling Mining Efforts: Anglo American Expands its Quest in Southern Lower Saxony

  • Go get 'em, mate!

Business broadens hunt for raw materials in southern Lower Saxony region - Company increases exploration of raw materials across southern Lower Saxony region

It's full steam ahead for Anglo American Exploration Germany, as they ramp up their operations in the mineral-rich region of Southern Lower Saxony. With a new permit in hand, they're now setting their sights on salt deposits in addition to metals, according to the Lower Saxony Mining Authority LBEG. Their exploring horizons will include minerals such as rock and potash salts, expanding their reach even further.

The expanded search area, known as Leine-Salt, spans roughly 1,961 square kilometers, nestled in the western foothills of the Harz mountains. Neighboring cities like Hildesheim, Salzgitter, and Göttingen, as well as quaint locals like Einbeck, Seesen, and Herzberg am Harz, will be their temporary neighbors as they get down to business.

The company has already had their noses to the ground, searching for deposits of copper, lead, gold, and silver underground. Once again, a georadar-equipped aircraft will take flight from Hildesheim for this exploration endeavor. The permit for the salt hunt is as valid as the one for the metals search, running until the end of 2028.

And it's not just Southern Lower Saxony that's in the spotlight - Anglo American is also gunning for resources in Thuringia. A representative from their parent company hinted at the importance of copper for the energy transition and economic growth. Consequently, the company is striving to broaden the possibilities for responsible resource extraction, aiming to mine critical resources more extensively within Europe.

They're already putting feelers out in Thuringia, with explorations underway and test drillings in the works. If the company nabbed sufficient resource deposits for economically viable extraction, another permit would be necessary to continue operations.

Digging deeper, scientists have been on the hunt for rare ores further east in the Upper Harz, testing a new measurement technique in the process. Preliminary findings from these experts suggest that rare ores may still be lurking in the Harz mountains.

The Harz region has a rich history of mining, going back over 3,000 years. It was once a major hub for substantial mining of silver, copper, lead, and zinc. As the 19th and 20th centuries rolled in, mining activities began to taper off, with the last mine closing its doors in 2007.

Yet, today, mining in Germany and Lower Saxony plays an essential role in the nation's economy and energy transition, given the demand for critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, and copper for emerging renewable technologies. The permitting and regulatory process is stringent, ensuring we tread lightly on Mother Earth in the pursuit of progress. Exploration areas are carefully designated based on geological surveys and the potential for resource deposits.

With Anglo American's expansion into the salt mines of Southern Lower Saxony, it remains to be seen what treasures lie in wait down below. Stay tuned for more updates as they dig deeper and unearth the Harz mountains’ secrets.

As Anglo American expands its mining operations in Southern Lower Saxony, seeking salt deposits in addition to metals, the company's reach will extend further into the Leine-Salt area, spanning 1,961 sq. km near Hildesheim, Salzgitter, and Göttingen. In light of the energy transition and economic growth, Anglo American is also keen on mining critical resources more extensively across Europe, beginning with explorations in Thuringia.

With copper playing a crucial role in energy transition and economic growth, and Anglo American's ongoing investigation in Thuringia, the company demonstrates a commitment to responsible resource extraction in the regional development of less favoured regions, aiding in the community's prosperity and contributing to the nation's industry and finance sector.
