Consensus Reached: Vanda Auto Industries Signs Supply Contract for Batteries with Top Battery Manufacturer, CATL
The Chinese battery giant, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), has signed a significant framework supply agreement with Singapore-based Vanda RE. This agreement will see CATL providing up to 2.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of its EnerX battery energy storage systems (BESS) for the Vanda Solar & Battery Project in the Riau Islands, Indonesia.
The Vanda Solar & Battery Project, a utility-scale solar-plus storage development, comprises 2 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity and a total of 4.4 GWh battery storage. CATL's supply will cover half the battery storage needs, with the batteries to be manufactured locally at CATL's new factory in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia. This factory, with a 15 GW production capacity, is set to commence construction in late June 2025.
This partnership is a significant step in supporting the Indonesia-Singapore green economic corridor. The cross-border project not only promotes clean energy trade but also encourages investment by leading clean technology companies like CATL in local Indonesian manufacturing. This will help develop Indonesia’s clean technology supply chains and industries by enhancing local content compliance and boosting industrial capabilities in battery production.
Vanda RE, a joint venture company co-owned by Gurīn Energy and Gentari, is committed to meeting the highest social, environmental, and governance criteria wherever it operates. Gurīn Energy, a renewable energy developer co-owned by Gentari, focuses on the development, ownership, and operation of solar, wind, and BESS assets. The battery energy storage systems for the Vanda Solar & Battery Project will be CATL's EnerX, enabling the project to meet Indonesia's local content requirement (TKDN).
Gentari, a Singapore-headquartered company focused on clean energy solutions, currently has approximately 100 employees across North Asia and South-East Asia. They have approximately 8GW of solar, wind, and storage projects in various stages of development in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, South Korea, and Japan.
This project is part of broader efforts by Singapore and Indonesia to develop a green economic corridor between the two countries, aiming to export renewable energy from Indonesia to Singapore. The agreement between Vanda RE and CATL is expected to incentivize top-tier clean tech companies like CATL to invest in setting up local manufacturing facilities, contributing to the growth of Indonesia’s clean tech manufacturing sector and regional renewable energy cooperation with Singapore.
