Extensive Rehabilitation Underway on Weser River Bridge on A1 Motorway
The Weser River Bridge on the A1 motorway in Germany is currently undergoing a significant rehabilitation project. This extensive work, which began some time ago, involves the removal of hazardous materials like asbestos, the replacement or reinforcement of corroded steel components, and the installation of updated safety features.
One of the key aspects of this rehabilitation is the removal of 24,000 square meters of asbestos-containing corrosion protection from the metal parts of the bridge. To ensure safety and compliance with environmental regulations, this process was carried out under full protection until a few weeks ago.
The structural integrity of the bridge is being restored through the replacement or reinforcement of steel components. About 120 tons of steel and 6,000 welds are needed to compensate for bulges in the steel of the bridge, and hundreds of struts will be installed to address these issues.
Improving traffic safety is another major focus of the rehabilitation. This includes the renewal of about 600 meters of railing on the bridge, as well as the installation of approximately four kilometers of guardrails, officially called "vehicle restraint systems." In total, an additional 480 tons of steel are needed for these safety features.
The project, which is expected to be completed in April 2028, has necessitated some changes to the traffic flow. The A1 motorway above the bridge has been narrowed to two lanes, and traffic can continue to run over the old bridge for another ten to twelve years.
The rehabilitation work is being led by project manager Sebastian Max, who recently conducted a tour through the hollow box of the highway bridge. The bridge, which was built in 1962, is currently being rebuilt at a cost of 93 million euros. In addition, 16,500 square meters of bridge surface are to be renewed as part of the project.
