Construction of Mainz-Süd intersection now finalized - Temporary closure of A63 near AK Mainz-Süd upcoming weekend
After a prolonged construction period, the Autobahn GmbH, under the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure in Germany, has announced the reopening of several ramps on the A60 motorway near Mainz. The completion of the construction site at the Mainz-Süd motorway junction, initially planned for spring 2025, is now scheduled for early October 2025.
The closure of two important ramps and on-ramps from Mainz towards Frankfurt and towards Bingen had been a source of inconvenience for the residents of Mainz for years. The Autobahn GmbH closed these ramps, forcing the people of Mainz to take long detours through the city to get onto the A60 towards Frankfurt.
However, the good news is that these ramps will be reopened. This includes the on-ramps from the A63 to the A60 towards Bingen and from the A63 coming from Mainz to the A60 towards Frankfurt. The off-ramp from the A60 coming from Bingen heading towards Mainz will also be reopened.
The new construction of the two bridge structures of the A60 over the A63 has impaired an important stretch on the motorway ring around Mainz. The congestion at the junction regularly caused long tailbacks far beyond the tunnel at Mainz-Hechtsheim and also regularly as far as Rüsselsheim. The regular congestion on the ring also had significant impacts on traffic within the city itself, as drivers and buses were stuck in traffic on important connections.
The construction costs of the project amount to 43 million euros. The dismantling of the construction site will begin in sections and lanes to minimize traffic disruptions. During the same period, the on-ramp from the A60 towards Bingen to the A63 towards Kaiserslautern will be closed.
In September 2020, the Autobahn GmbH had to completely stop work on the bridge constructions due to numerous cracks that formed on the new south bridge after the concrete slab had been poured. The new construction of the two bridge halves was announced in November 2017, with a completion date of 2020. However, the completion date was later revised to summer of 2024, but it did not happen.
For more information on the construction delay at the Autobahnkreuz Mainz-South, visit the website. For detailed information on the construction project, visit the project page of the Autobahn GmbH. Upon completion of the work, traffic management on the A60 will be finalized and signage adjusted. The currently open hard shoulder for traffic from Frankfurt to the B40 heading towards Mainz will be removed after the completion of the work.
Drivers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and expect increased traffic around the Gutenberg Center during the closure period. Detours for this closure will be via the Klein-Winterheim interchange, the Mainz Lerchenberg roundabout, Haifa-Allee to the B40 in Mainz-Bretzenheim-South.
