Construction work on a Low Level Bridge will lead to traffic disruptions in the downtown area of Edmonton.

Southbound Low Level Highway, initially built in 1949, last went through significant restoration in 1994. Given that it's been three decades since then, a new round of renovation seems necessary.

Edmonton's Major Bridges to Undergo Construction in 2025

Edmonton, Alberta — The city of Edmonton has announced a series of major infrastructure projects on its river-crossing bridges for the year 2025, aiming to address aging infrastructure and ensure safe and efficient traffic flow in and out of the downtown area.

Low Level Bridge

The rehabilitation of the Low Level Bridge, one of three major bridges carrying traffic in and out of Edmonton's downtown, has commenced on July 28, 2025. The focus of the work is on the southbound lanes, which are undergoing repairs and strengthening to extend their service life for approximately four months. During this period, the southbound bridge will be fully closed, with temporary single-lane closures during off-peak hours while traffic crossovers are built to move southbound traffic onto the northbound bridge.

Northbound traffic will be shifted to the 1900 northbound span, which will carry two-way traffic during construction. Pedestrian and cyclist access remains on the northbound bridge sidewalk, and shared pathways under the bridge will stay open. Bus stops servicing northbound traffic, including McDougall Hill and Grierson Hill, and at Low Level Bridge and 98 Avenue will be temporarily closed, with affected bus routes detoured. Construction work on the Low Level Bridge is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Dawson Bridge

Repair work on the Dawson Bridge is planned to start in the summer of 2025, with the specific date yet to be disclosed. The repairs are scheduled to be limited to weekend or overnight closures to minimize traffic disruptions and avoid overlapping with the Low Level Bridge work. The focus of the repair work is on maintaining functionality while reducing impact on traffic flow.

Wellington Bridge

The Wellington Bridge, located on 102 Avenue near the former Royal Alberta Museum, will be demolished and replaced starting in the fall of 2025. This bridge is a major connection between the west end and downtown Edmonton. The new bridge is expected to reopen by late 2026, with landscaping and finishing work extending into 2027.

The city has emphasized efforts to minimize disruptions, including staggered scheduling and limited closure times for the Dawson Bridge. However, there is some public concern about overlapping construction impacts on downtown access and businesses.

These bridge projects are part of a series of significant river-crossing infrastructure works in Edmonton planned for 2025–2026. The city aims to address aging infrastructure nearing the end of its service life and ensure continued safe and efficient traffic flow in and out of downtown Edmonton.

Finance will play a crucial role in funding the major river-crossing bridge projects scheduled for 2025 in Edmonton, as the city seeks to modernize its aging infrastructure. The completion of these projects, which include the rehabilitation of the Low Level Bridge, the repair work on the Dawson Bridge, and the demolition and replacement of the Wellington Bridge, will undoubtedly have an impact on the transportation industry, particularly in the downtown area.
