King Charles III, the newly crowned monarch of the United Kingdom, is navigating his role with a significant personal net worth estimated at around £640 million. This wealth, however, does not include the Crown Estate or the Sovereign Grant, which are held in trust for the nation and support official royal functions and public duties.

The Duchy of Lancaster, a private estate worth approximately £650 million, is one of the primary sources of the King's personal income. This estate, consisting of commercial, agricultural, and residential properties, provides an annual income of around £27 million.

In addition, King Charles owns private estates such as Sandringham and Balmoral, which add significant value to his personal fortune.

The Crown Estate, valued at around £15.6 billion, is not part of the King's personal wealth. Its annual profits exceed £300 million, but the income is paid into the UK Treasury, with a portion returned to the monarch via the Sovereign Grant to fund official royal duties.

The Sovereign Grant, a public funding mechanism, is calculated as a percentage of the profits of the Crown Estate. This grant, currently around £86.3 million annually, supports the official expenses of the royal family, including King Charles' overseas travels.

In the current financial year, the royals' travels have cost approximately €5.5 million, an increase of €580,000 from the previous year. The most expensive trip was King Charles and Queen Camilla's visit to Samoa, which cost €466,000.

The upkeep of palaces, including the current £430 million renovation of Buckingham Palace, is funded by public funds. The Sovereign Grant is also expected to increase in the coming years, with an additional €107 million estimated to be spent by 2027, mainly due to the complex offset financing of the grant.

Approximately €35 million was paid to staff around the royal family in the last financial year. The British royal family received approximately €100 million from public funds in the 2024/25 financial year.

In summary, King Charles III's personal net worth primarily comes from his private assets like the Duchy of Lancaster and private estates, but excludes the Crown Estate and the Sovereign Grant, which are held in trust for the nation and support official royal functions and public duties rather than being personal wealth.

The Commission, in light of King Charles III's personal net worth, could consider proposing a directive that requires businesses to acknowledge and incorporate environmental considerations in their finances when managing their assets, such as the Duchy of Lancaster and private estates, to ensure a sustainable future.

Moreover, as King Charles III's wealth grows, particularly from his personal income generated by the Duchy of Lancaster and private estates, there could be a need to implemented stricter regulations that ensure businesses, like those associated with the King's assets, are financially responsible and mindful of their environmental impact.
