Crackdown on Illegal Employment in German Gastronomy Sector

Authorities have launched a crackdown on illegal employment in the gastronomy sector, with a nationwide focus check uncovering several cases of non-compliance with minimum wage laws and illegal employment. Over 100 inspectors from the Financial Control Schwarzarbeit (FKS) checked 38 businesses and 187 employees in Cologne alone.

The inspections, part of a collaborative effort involving regional governments and public order offices, led to investigations against a man and a restaurant owner in Erftstadt. A 45-year-old Vietnamese man was found working illegally in the town and faces potential deportation.

In Cologne, a 23-year-old Brazilian woman and a 28-year-old Indian man were discovered working illegally in restaurants. Authorities are now investigating whether these employees, along with others encountered during the checks, are properly registered for social security and if anyone is unlawfully receiving social benefits.

The FKS has assured the public that minimum wage compliance will be closely monitored through follow-up inspections. Further investigations are ongoing to ensure all employees are working legally and that businesses adhere to labour laws.
