Darwin Airline Accuses Swiss of Anti-Competitive Behavior, Files Complaint

Delta Airline, a small European carrier, has accused Swiss International Air Lines of anti-competitive behaviour. The airline has filed a complaint with Switzerland's Competition Commission (COMCO) alleging Swiss' actions were aimed at driving Delta out of the market.

Delta Airline, based in the Swiss city of Basel, serves 28 destinations with a fleet of 12 aircraft and carries nearly half a million passengers annually. The airline's CEO, Maurizio Merlo, believes Swiss' actions were predatory and began in 2014 following Etihad Airways' planned acquisition of a 33.3% stake in Swiss.

Delta alleges Swiss terminated a long-standing wet lease agreement without valid reason, replacing Delta aircraft with larger ones from Tyrolean Airways on Swiss domestic routes. Additionally, Swiss cancelled an agreement to accommodate Delta passengers in case of flight disruptions and launched new routes in direct competition with Delta. Furthermore, Delta claims Swiss terminated an interline agreement, increasing burden on Delta passengers connecting to or from Swiss flights.

Delta Airline's complaint with COMCO alleges abusive and anti-competitive behaviour by Swiss International Air Lines. The outcome of the investigation will determine the future of competition in the European air travel market.
