Decrease in Exports from Saxony-Anhalt observed during the initial half of 2025
In the first half of 2025, Saxony-Anhalt, a federal state in Germany, saw a significant shift in its trade dynamics. The state exported goods worth 11.0 billion euros, a slight decrease of 1.3% compared to the same period in 2024.
More than two-thirds (70.5%) of Saxony-Anhalt's exports were sent to the member states of the European Union. Within the EU, Poland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and France were the main export countries. Poland received 1.4 billion euros worth of exports, an increase of 0.7%, while the Netherlands received 0.8 billion euros, a decrease of 16.9%. The Czech Republic saw an increase of 13.1%, with exports valued at 0.9 billion euros. France received 0.8 billion euros worth of exports, a decrease of 5.5%. The United States was one of the main export countries outside Europe, with an export value of 0.5 billion euros, representing an increase of 4.8%.
In terms of imports, 43.1% came from the countries of the European Union. The European Union's Eurozone countries accounted for 27.2% of all imports. Poland was the second most important import country, with a value of 1.1 billion euros, representing a growth of 3.5%. The United Kingdom was the third most important import country, with a value of 1.0 billion euros, representing an increase of 48.0%.
The most significant changes in imports were observed from non-EU countries. The People's Republic of China was the most important import country, with a value of 3.4 billion euros, representing an increase of 81.2%. This surge was mainly in non-edible goods. Canada (+93% in imports mainly grain and rapeseed), China (+24% mainly in non-edible goods), Australia (+111% mainly rapeseed), Côte d'Ivoire (+68% mainly cocoa), while imports from Ukraine (-12%) and Russia (-74%) decreased significantly. The People's Republic of China was another key export country outside Europe, with an export value of 0.3 billion euros, but a decrease of 13.9%.
It's important to note that a balancing of the import and export results is not appropriate due to the different definition of general and special trade for methodological reasons. The federal state foreign trade statistics show the export in the special trade and the import in the general trade for reasons of data collection.
In total, goods worth 13.7 billion euros were imported into Saxony-Anhalt in the first half of 2025, an increase of 7.7% compared to the same period in 2024. This growth in imports, particularly from non-EU countries, indicates a broader global reach for Saxony-Anhalt's trade in the first half of 2025.
