Brandenburg Ambulance Ride Cost Dispute Remains Unresolved After Weeks of Negotiations

Brandenburg counties and health insurers continue their dispute over the costs of ambulance rides, without a resolution in sight. The intricate nature of the cost calculation process is impeding the achievement of a settlement, according to Johannes Wagner, CEO of the County Association. Neither party is deemed responsible for the delay.

Aконtractجoncontroversy over ambulance ride costs

As stated by Wagner, the objective is straightforward: ambulance rides in Brandenburg should come at no cost to patients. This issue was initially contentious at the beginning of the year, as health insurers have only been offering fixed flat rates for emergency services since January 1, contingent on an agreement with the counties on a new cost calculation method. To date, the counties of Märkisch-Oderland, Teltow-Fläming, Potsdam-Mittelmark, Oder-Spree, Oberspreewald-Lausitz, Barnim, Oberhavel, and Spree-Neiße have forfeit agreements with insurance companies over the costs. The County Association considers the flat rates to be unlawful. The County of Märkisch-Oderland even issued billing notices to patients as early as mid-March.

A truce was reached at a meeting with the state government at the end of March, lasting for eight weeks starting from April 1. During this time, no further billing notices for ambulance rides were to be sent to citizens. This ceasefire has now been extended to June 30.

The "constructive talks" between rescue service providers — the counties — and health insurers will persist, stated a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health. The ministry is overseeing these negotiations. "In consequence, work is underway on a new calculation model," the spokesperson said. "However, this must be approved by the insurers and comply with the legal requirements of the fee law."

Wagner, CEO of the County Association, also reiterated that there is no dispute party to blame for the drawn-out process.

The counties and health insurers continue their negotiations, working towards a new calculation model that adheres to the legal requirements of the fee law and receives approval from insurance companies. The most recent ceasefire extension stipulated that billing notices for ambulance rides should be withheld until June 30.

  2. As part of their ongoing negotiations, the counties and health insurers are collaborating to develop a new calculation model for ambulance ride costs, which must comply with legal requirements and gain approval from insurance companies.
  3.
