Grimacing workers belonging to the food giant Nestlé have stood up against job losses in Germany. Andreas Zorn, the foreman of the Nestlé Germany works council, voiced his discontent stating, "For years, Nestlé has ruthlessly chopped jobs in Germany and moved production—for instance, to Eastern European countries where wages are significantly lower." The headcount has dwindled in Germany from 12,400 in 2014 to a mere 6,500 today.
The company claims the Neuss site will shutter by mid-2026, and the Conow plant will be sold. Nevertheless, Nestlé promises to persist in producing in Germany. The decision-making process regarding these two sites has not been an easy one.
In 2021, Nestlé's global sales dropped by 1.8% to 91.4 billion Swiss francs. Profits also dropped by 2.9%, despite standing at a respectable 10.9 billion francs.
