Denmark Joins 2007 Hague Convention to Ease Cross-Border Child & Spousal Support Recovery

Denmark has joined the 2007 Hague Convention, making it easier to collect unpaid child and spousal support from Danish citizens living abroad. The move, hailed as an important step by Tax Minister Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen, will enable the Danish Debt Collection Agency to pursue debts in 12 new countries, including the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Serbia, to recover news and information about the creditor's location.

Previously, collecting such debts from abroad was complex, requiring arrangements with foreign countries and news on the creditor's location. With the new convention, Denmark can now work with authorities in these countries to recover money owed by persons who owe underholdsbidrag.

Minister Halsboe-Jørgensen highlighted that this change will benefit Danes currently entitled to support but left with financial gaps due to the creditor living abroad. The Danish Debt Collection Agency will gain new powers to pursue these debts, ensuring that those who are owed money receive it.

Denmark's accession to the 2007 Hague Convention expands its reach in debt recovery abroad, benefiting Danish citizens and their families. The move opens up avenues for collection in 12 new countries, with the Danish Debt Collection Agency now empowered to pursue outstanding child and spousal support payments.
