In a strategic move to tap into the dynamic commercial market of South Africa, global law firm Dentons has expanded its presence in the country. The firm, which already has a strong presence in more than 50 countries worldwide, has opened offices in both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Dentons' focus sectors for these services are energy, infrastructure, mining, transport, and finance, making it well-positioned to serve clients across various industries. This expansion is part of the firm's broader commitment to Africa, where it has been present for over 55 years.

In South Africa specifically, Dentons established its presence in 2014 through a combination with KapdiTwala, marking a significant milestone in its African growth. The firm's Cape Town office was launched in April last year, and now, the Johannesburg office has been added to its portfolio.

The firm's local presence in key cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg allows it to effectively serve clients across South Africa. Dentons advises on a wide range of matters, including energy, transportation, aviation and aerospace, hospitality and leisure, natural resources, infrastructure, disputes, private equity, and project finance.

The firm's move is expected to benefit international clients operating in South Africa, particularly in the focus sectors. Dentons' expertise in navigating complex legal and regulatory environments, combined with its local presence, makes it an attractive choice for clients involved in large-scale projects such as roads, railways, and ports.

As a leading banking and finance team, Dentons offers comprehensive legal advice in financial transactions, project finance, and private equity, supporting clients in these sectors. The firm's commitment to innovation and technology is also evident, with a global strategy that involves leveraging technology and AI to enhance legal services. While this aspect is not yet directly implemented in South Africa, it could potentially be integrated to modernize service delivery.

Dentons is also the first global firm with Level 1 Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) status in South Africa. This qualification demonstrates the firm's polycentric positioning and offers clients a true choice, according to Joe Andrew, the global chairman of Dentons. The Johannesburg launch is intended to enhance service offerings for international clients, while the South African offices aim to tap into the dynamism of the region.
