Development approval granted again for Swindon apartment project

The former Reform Club in Swindon is set to undergo a transformation, as a new plan to convert the property into flats has received a second approval from Swindon Borough Council. This project, initially cancelled due to Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020/21, has been revived by Brett Property Group with a new application submitted earlier this year.

The new plans, which aim to address the increased need for home office spaces following the pandemic, include five one-bedroom flats equipped with study rooms. This addition is expected to marginally improve the viability of the development for securing a lending facility.

The front elevation of the building will be altered to provide vehicular access to the rear parking, ensuring convenience for residents. Adequate cycle provision is also included in the site of the development, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

The change of use to residential would introduce a more compatible use in terms of noise and disturbance with adjoining properties than the existing use of the property as a community club. The property forms part of a residential terrace and already has a residential appearance, with the changes to the building not significantly altering the established residential character of the building, street scene, and character of the area.

One car parking space is allocated per dwelling in the new plan, ensuring ample parking for residents. However, the project is facing delays due to the effects of the pandemic.

Despite the information about who approved the redevelopment plan not being available in the provided search results, it is clear that this project is set to provide a solution to the issue of increased fuel costs by offering study rooms, and to help those who now work from home. The new plans also aim to contribute to sustainability, making it an exciting development for Swindon.
