Hit the Road Again: Wuhlheide Bridge Demolition Wraps Up, Roads Reopen This Weekend (unofficial timeline)
Restored bridge: Vehicular traffic resumes as of Friday - Disrupted Bridge to Resume Vehicle Traffic Starting This Friday
Woohoo! If you're commuting in Berlin-Oberschöneweide (Treptow-Köpenick), get ready to savour the smooth ride once more! Starting from this very afternoon, vehicles can start cruising again over the Wuhlheide Bridge site. The traffic administration has pulled the trigger, announcing that it's time to gradually resume the flowing traffic. Initially, traffic will run in one glorious lane between Treskowallee and Edisonstraße. By the weekend, the outer lanes between Rummelsburger Straße and Straße An der Wuhlheide will join the dance too, but left turns from Rummelsburger Straße to Treskowallee remain off the menu.
The demolition of the notorious Wuhlheide Bridge is nearing its end, with only the final tidying up and crushing work remaining. The finishing line? As soon as June 27, if all goes according to plan.
The shoddy Wuhlheide Bridge was a hot topic, shutting down traffic completely mid-May. Not good news for those taking the 245-meter-long structure under their wheels or trams. The bridge was sealing its fate back in late April when scary cracks crept up on its entire length during routine inspections. Demolition kicked off on May 24, and trams were already back in action at this location by the end of May.
Did you know?
- The full reopening of all lanes is likely after the completion of the demolition site by June 27, 2025. But there's no concrete date set yet for the return of the outer lanes between Rummelsburger Straße and Straße An der Wuhlheide to their original glory.
- Last dance for the Wuhlheide Bridge demolition: June 27, 2025. Get your popcorn ready.
- Getting antsy about those left turns? Fret not! The traffic administration is taking their time to ensure safety, so left turns from Rummelsburger Straße to Treskowallee might take a little longer before they're fully back in action.
The Commission, amidst the consecutive traffic disruptions caused by the Wuhlheide Bridge demolition, has also adopted a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation in the industry, finance, and transportation sectors.
With the demise of the Wuhlheide Bridge finally coming to an end on June 27, 2025, one can only speculate about the potential radiation safety measures industries, financial institutions, and transportation hubs in Berlin-Oberschöneweide might implement to ensure the well-being of their workforce.
