Disruption for railway passengers traveling from Munich to Salzburg

In August 2025, passengers traveling between Munich and Salzburg face significant delays and cancellations due to extensive construction work on the Munich–Rosenheim and Rosenheim–Salzburg routes. This infrastructure upgrade, aimed at long-term improvement of punctuality and stability, has led to disruptions primarily from August 1 to 18, 2025, with some cancellations continuing beyond that period.

The railway operator, DB, expressed awareness of the difficult situation for passengers and apologized for the inconvenience. On Tuesday morning, the line was reported to be almost fully operational, except for a short single-track section. Some affected passengers were able to take the S-Bahn across the border to Freilassing and continue their journey on regional trains there.

However, many long-distance trains are delayed or canceled, particularly all direct trains between Salzburg and Munich, with some Railjet trains rerouted via Passau, causing 30 to 60-minute longer travel times and no Salzburg stops on those routes. Rail replacement bus services are provided in local traffic sections to mitigate disruption, but passengers frequently face long waiting times due to missed connections.

Communication issues and insufficient alternatives add to passenger frustration, with frequent delays, chaotic processes, overwhelmed staff, overcrowded trains, and unclear announcements reported. Travelers are strongly advised to check current schedules and be prepared for longer travel times and travel inconveniences.

The disruptions are part of the ongoing backlog from the previous day's cancellations and delays. The backlog has continued to cause some delays and train cancellations. Passengers were left stranded at crowded platforms, according to regional broadcaster BR24. The official statement did not provide information on any alternative transportation options for affected passengers.

The statement from DB was made to regional broadcaster BR24, but the nature or extent of the construction work causing the disruptions was not specified. It was clarified that the disruptions are not directly related to the unexpected construction work between Rosenheim and Freilassing mentioned in earlier reports.

Salzburg, a popular holiday destination for Germans, has seen many travelers stranded this week due to the train cancellations and delays. Austrian rail operator ÖBB reported delays of up to 120 minutes. Despite the challenges, passengers are advised to remain patient and follow updates from the railway operator for the most accurate information.

  1. The disruptions in the railway industry due to construction work have resulted in delays and cancellations in the finance sector, as many travelers are experiencing longer travel times and additional costs.
  2. In the transportation sector, Railjet trains are being rerouted and bus services provided, but these alternatives are not always sufficient, leading to long waiting times and missed connections, particularly for those traveling between Munich and Salzburg.
